A new song! Today’s song video is a new song recently created in Marsabit, Kenya by a team of Samburu musicians. This is a scripture song of “The Great Commission” – which is Jesus’ challenge to his disciples to take the gospel to the whole world. This is Matthew 28:18-20:
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
This scripture is a key part of the discipleship training program used by Lifeway Mission International. Their training program is called Disciple Making Movement (DMM) and it has been highly effective for Lifeway throughout eastern Africa. This recording project was completed in the town of Marsabit in Marsabit County. There are fourteen people groups in Marsabit County – all of them categorized as “unreached.” (meaning less than two percent are Christians). We are honored to help indigenous artists use their gifts to leverage the impact of the gospel message among these unreached peoples.
I especially enjoy watching the eyes of these musicians, as they look at each other and the camera during the nervous process of recording. Left to right the musicians are Emmah, Benard, Shadrack and Moses.
It was wonderful to be able to record outside (it was winter there). We had a shady spot and the end of a courtyard to protect from the sun (at 5500 ft elevation the sun is a little intense, even in winter). The acoustics worked better here than any other space we could find in the compound. The stone wall was beautiful in both texture and color as a backdrop. Even with the ongoing construction noise and lots of children around we were able to work outside with few interruptions.
We pray that these songs will enable the DMM training to be more effective in these marginally-literate and unreached people groups.
Enjoy!
